Passport processing in the US can take 6 to 8 weeks under normal circumstances, and expedited service runs faster but costs more. If you win a contest with a travel window that opens in three weeks and your passport expired last year, you've got a real problem.

2. What Are the Blackout Dates and Travel Windows?

Almost every travel contest prize comes with strings attached in the form of travel restrictions. Common ones include blackout dates around major holidays, limited booking windows ("travel must be completed by March 31"), and specific departure cities that may or may not be convenient for you.

If you're a teacher who can only travel in summer and the prize requires travel between October and February, that's a mismatch worth knowing before you enter. Same goes for anyone with a job that gets chaotic during Q4, a family situation that limits flexibility, or a side business that makes spontaneous travel genuinely difficult.

3. Can You Actually Get the Time Off?

This sounds obvious, but it's easy to skip the mental math in the excitement of a great prize. Most travel contest prizes require a minimum of five to seven days of travel, and international trips often mean even longer windows when you factor in transit time.

If you're working a job with limited PTO, caring for a family member, or running a small business that can't easily run without you, a two-week international trip might create more stress than joy — even if it's free.

A good gut check: If I won this tomorrow, could I realistically take this trip within the prize window? If the honest answer is "probably not," your time might be better spent entering contests with shorter, more flexible prize structures.

4. Would You Actually Want to Go There?

This one sounds almost too simple, but it matters. Not every dream destination is your dream destination. A lot of people enter contests on autopilot because the prize sounds impressive or the imagery is beautiful, without stopping to ask whether they'd genuinely enjoy the experience.

Most travel contest prizes cover flights and hotel accommodations, but they often leave out meals beyond a certain amount, resort fees, travel insurance, ground transportation, visa fees, gratuities, and excursions. International trips can also come with unexpected incidentals that add up quickly.

A prize described as an "all-inclusive resort stay" might still require you to cover airfare taxes and fees, which on international routes can run $200 to $500 per person. Before entering, ask yourself: If I won, could I comfortably cover the out-of-pocket costs that come with this prize?

If the answer is no right now, that doesn't mean never — it just means this might not be the right contest for this moment in your life.

6. Are There Guest or Companion Restrictions?

Many travel prizes are awarded for a single traveler or for "winner plus one guest." If you're picturing bringing your whole family on a five-person adventure, make sure the prize actually supports that. Some contests allow the winner to bring a companion but require both parties to sign liability waivers and meet age requirements. Others restrict who qualifies as a "guest."

If traveling solo sounds unappealing and the prize doesn't include a companion, that's worth knowing upfront.
